of the golden compass

When I had finished reading the His Dark Materials trilogy I really wished I knew/had a daemon.

The Golden Compass has been adapted into a movie!!! O_O

It looks pretty good and it makes me wonder if it’ll be “all that” – considering it is a fantasy and generally the fantasy genre has never seem to be able to translate well to movie (prime example would be Eragon). I hope it is…

Anywho, now that it’s being turn into a movie, it’s got all these promo stuff…. like finding out what your daemon is! =D

Sooo… I’m an Adan spider… cuz after answering 20 questions, it deemed me to be: “Soft spoken, assertive, flexible, passive, dependable”.

It’s kinda ironic… cuz I’m afraid of spiders >_<

of paprika

So I was checking out Apple’s movie trailer page the other night when the title of a movie and its poster caught my attention.

Paprika (the 2006 one, not the 1991 film, which was loosely based on the first erotic novel “Fanny Hill” by John Cleland) looks wondrously gorgeous, if slightly on the bizarre and freaky side, mystery SF anime movie directed by Satoshi Kon (who also did Perfect Blue – a twisted movie imho – and Tokyo Godfathers – which I quite liked ^_^) that was adapted from the manga by Yasutaka Tsutsui (or novel, keep getting differing what’s it.. info).

In the trailer, there was a quote from the New York Times: “Evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox.”

So now I’m totally obsessed about it… even though some people said it was crap, that the plot was flimsy, held up only by the sheer imaginative and awesome animation. Or that Kon’s ideas are too big for the movie, running away with several ideas at once. *Shrugs* Compels me all the more to watch it! ^_^

I really want to get my grubby mitts on it… legally that is =P I would gladly pay for it ^_^

I managed to find a couple of tracks from the movie and this song is pretty much on repeat =P

I find it quite uplifting and… happy in a way. At the moment, it’s my “it will be okay” song – calming me down when I start to panic as I slog sluggishly through the muck that is my capstone. I love the guitar (?) in the opening sequence and the Vietnamese voice over a little past halfway was surprising. A comment from lunacy’s blog V2 roughly translated it to: “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. These are our hopes and fears. These are our dreams.” I’ll get my mom to see if that’s what’s really been said! hehe

Any whooo… this is the brief synopsis of what Paprika is about (from Paprika’s website):

29 year old Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18 year old “dream detective,” code named Paprika, who can enter into people’s dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis.

At Atsuko’s lab, a powerful new psychotherapy device known as the “DC-Mini” has been invented by her brilliant colleague, Dr. Tokita, a nerdy overweight genius. Although this state-of-art device could revolutionize the world of psychotherapy, in the wrong hands the potential misuse of the devise could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate the dreamer’s personality while they are asleep.

When one of the only four existing DC-Mini prototypes is stolen in the final stages of research around the same time that Dr. Tokita’s research assistant Himuro goes missing, Atsuko suspects it’s not a coincidence. If the DC-Mini isn’t found, this could lead to the government’s refusal to sanction the use of the machine for psychotherapy treatment.

When several of the remaining researchers at the lab start to go mad, dreaming while in their waking states, haunted by a Japanese doll which featured heavily in the dreams of one of Himuro’s schizophrenic patients, Atsuko knows for sure that whoever is manipulating the machines has a more evil purpose: the DC-Mini is being used to destroy people’s minds.

of vicariously living through photos

Because I had to stay at home to do my crapstone capstone (basically a final year thesis), I missed out on quite a couple of things…

Sokun celebrated her 25th birthday at ZanziBar in Newtown (happy birthday babez! ^_^ Sorry I missed it!!) and Dat has wonderfully uploaded his photos from that night.

[Edit: Michael has uploaded his photos too! =) Yay! More photos!!]

Ram, Daniel, Duy, and Will had their graduation dinners/drinks/ski-action shenanigans at Red Oak in the CBD that same night. There are photos from Will’s camera, Kath’s, and Leon’s.

T_T baaaah stupid thesis *shake fist* daym yooooouuuuuu…

of this week’s favourite postsecret

I’ve been a big fan of PostSecret ever since Duy introduced it to me.

New secrets are posted every Sunday afternoon and because there is no archiving of previous weeks, I have gotten into the habit of downloading them and some emailed comments.

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but haven’t… I’d like to post up my favourite PostSecret every week ^_^ (if I remember to that is).
