of a birthday at the races

Sokhan celebrated her birthday on Saturday (13 Sept) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, where it coincided with Myer’s Mad About the Hat Day. This naturally meant that we had to dress up and be decked out with all sorts of fancy accessories (namely a big ass hat). And naturally, it also meant that I was ill-prepared for it. I had planned to use this dodgy hairpiece thing that I had made for Sath’s birthday a while back (birthday theme: day at the races), but it was pretty dodgy so I asked Ruby what she thought of it.

“It looks like a troll,” she replied, wrinkling her nose a bit at it. T_T Gah. Fine. I didn’t have time to worry about a replacement, however, because I had forgotten to vote for the local government election on my way back from Ram’s and so would have to also forgo the fancy hair experiments Ruby was going to conduct on my head. Ugh, I was so running late that day! It was a good thing Ruby reminded me, but bad that I had to vote in my cocktail dress… complete with flip flops. Classy.

We picked up My-Le (where I borrowed her little silver hair piece thing to stick in my bun), headed to Sokhan’s place to pick up our wristbands to get in, and finally made our way to the racecourse. We should have expected to experience massive traffic jam around the place, but somehow was still surprised at the sheer number of cars blocking up all 3 lanes. I was so glad Ruby was driving, as she deftly bullied her way through to the right-most lane from the left-most lane, only to discover that all the racecourse’s parking lots were full and so had to bully from the right-most back into the left-most. I know we would be still stuck in traffic if I was driving haha.

It looked like close street parking would be a lost cause, but thankfully found one right at the end of a side street. Although it was a short walk (maybe about 10-15 minutes in total), it felt like a trek in our heels and the heat – especially since we had to go across that ginormous footbridge.

Happily, the Grand Pavilion wasn’t far from the entrance and it was blissfully air conditioned. We were checked off the list of attendees and had our wristbands noted by the staff as we walked through and up the stairs to the room-hall-thing.

We were struck by how big the function room was and tried to absorb the sight: 2 massively long glass walls (opening to the racecourse itself), tables decorated by different headpieces as the centrepiece, bookies to the left, live band a bit further up, and a pamper lounge tucked away in the corner. What the? Pamper Lounge? This needed further investigation… later.

The staff told us our table numbers (9, 12, and 13 – yay for photographic evidence! Haha) and that we could choose to sit anywhere at them. No one from our party was there yet, so we bagged table 9 as it was closest and right next to the racecourse. Perfect view of the racecourse – not that it matter as when the races started, practically everyone had surged to the grand stand, blocking out the natural light and of course the view of the race. *sigh*

While waiting for everyone else to arrive, we sauntered over to the Pamper Lounge. Two girls were having their make-up done and it seemed that the ladies doing the make-up were also educating them on what was done and how to do it.

A long time later, it was Ruby’s turn, then My-Le’s. By this stage, more of our group had arrived and Betty joined us at the Lounge. We were both contemplating whether or not we had the patience to wait and to sit through lengthy lecturing on our skin condition/tone/whatever. I decided I wasn’t. Hehe

Ruby was finally complete and the first thing I thought was, “Oooh sparkle-sparkle!” as the foundation used had tiny-tiny glitter stuff in it, which was quickly followed by, “That looks a bit heavy.” And it was, Ruby felt like she had a mask on her face and the lipstick/lipgloss thing made her smile funny. She ended up blotting most of it off her crisp white napkin. My-Le, in the end, didn’t like it either – it was way too heavy and to be honest, I thought the foundation she had on before was much better than the make over (you couldn’t tell she was wearing any!). Betty ended up getting her eyes and lips done only, but even then I thought the make-up artist was a bit heavy handed with the eye shadow.

~~~~
With all the makeovers and eating the entrĂ©e (the prawns were quite nice hehe I quietly swapped my chicken/beef/whatever-it-was dish with the prawn dish sitting next to me – I’m quite sure no one was sitting there =P), we missed betting and watching the first race of the day.
Almost everyone got into betting for the second race and a few of us won. My-Le decided to go for the trifecta and every single time she would get 2 out of the 3 horses – she’d get all excited… until she realised 2 out of 3 ain’t good enough and would returned nothing. I think she got all frustrated and drowned her sorrows in her cups, as she got quite, quite tipsy hehe.
Hmmm what else happened…
During the second race, a chick’s hat flew off and onto the green below the stand. She went to pick it up and was ambushed by a sudden gust that lifted her dress up to almost indecent heights. There were catcalls, cheers, and a few disappointed groans from the crowd – the poor girl was so embarrassed, you could literally see her turn bright red, as she hurried back to the grand stand.
We went out for a walk to the other side of the pavilion, just to see what’s the go. The automatic doors slid opened, revealing a much brighter light than we were accustomed to and a waft of warm-hot air curled around us, toying with our attire and hair. Did I mention it was a gorgeous day? Blue, sunny skies with a warm breeze that now and again picked up. The girls were saying that it was such a perfect day for such an outing and that it was the perfect start to the warm summer season coming up. It was nice… until it got a bit uncomfortable and the air a bit stifling.
The other side was very much the non-fancy side and the more betting side of the races, where almost old-style bookies stood by the odds of the horses and each carried a massive bag that seemed like it was a throw-back from the days of yore. We did find something new though:
Two girls were walking around selling tickets for the “official” after-party at Argyle, complete with bus ticket. They wore tight outfits and the blonde decided to up the ante and had her shirt unbuttoned half-way down. I practically boggled, but she had nice boobs I guess – flaunt what you’ve got while it’s still good? hehe
We took lots of shenanigan photos and before we knew it, the day was over.
More photos are on facebook and naturally, flickr! Wondering why they’re mostly in black and white? I’m not sure what it was, maybe it was the bright light from outside that messed up the indoor lighting, the clashing colours, the awful carpet… whatever it was, the photos were awful! I got rather emo and had Bien compare the colour photos with the black and white ones to see if it was just me that thought b/w looked better.
He didn’t mind the colour photos so much and we kind of argued back and forth on the merits of b/w versus colour photos (specifically to this set anyways). In the end, I was like, “Screw it. I’m so very certain black and white looks much, much better in terms of contrast and definition. If anyone whines to me about not knowing what colour a certain dress is, I’ll link them to someone who left their photos as is.” and proceeded to black and white almost all of the photos. Bah.
Ooopsy, I digress. So we ended up at Tom’s place and then went to Albion Hotel for dinner. Most of us anyways. One of the other girls didn’t bring her ID with her and so wasn’t allowed in, so that group went home.
Betty raged a bit at the girl’s lack of common sense. She had asked her why she didn’t bring her ID and the reply was: “We were going to the races. I didn’t think we’d need it.”
“But you always bring your ID everywhere with you!” Betty said indignantly to us afterwards. “Why would you leave it at home?! Especially when you look like you’re 16 and you know there’s going to be alcohol involved!” It was kind of funny watching her rage, but I did think the other girl was a bit silly in not bringing her ID. I mean, if anything, I bring it just in case something happens and they need to identify me. *shrugs* Morbid I know, but hey… anything can happen.
We chatted and ate pizza and chatted some more, until Ram came. Well, not really, where there’s Ram, there’s always chatter, so there was more of that. Hehehe.
~~~~

Mark, Frank, and Christian dropped by Ram’s place and we watched The Mummy 3 and Wanted – Ruby came by about a quarter or halfway through the Mummy 3, as everyone went home from Roxy and she couldn’t sleep.

Was very late when we finished. So very tired, but fun! =) That night was kind of a blur so I can’t remember all the silly things that were said or done =( I’m quite sure we teased Mark for being a sad panda again, for whatever reason… OH!

I whispered to Frank, “Let’s stacks-on Mark!” Frank did an impressive stacks on and I jumped on top, only to kind of do a slide-tumble off Frank’s back. T_T Frank complained that I didn’t help with the stacks on and that I needed to give it more “oomph” when coming down.

So we tried again, this time with Ruby, except Mark was ready for us. Frank kind of did a guerrilla war cry as he was about to stacks-on Mark, which changed mid-way to a slightly panicked, half-strangled noise. Mark had kind of punched him in the special place. =.=;; Or almost, I’m not sure which, but Frank was like, “Boy, was I glad you guys didn’t jump on top yet!” Hahahah.

Anywho, that’s all I got =P

Sep 16

of the season’s last run

We left Sydney on Friday (5 Sept) for what would be our last trip to the snows at the early time of about 10pm. *sighs* A few cars met up at Ram’s before heading down; it was kind of a bitter-sweet trip, knowing there will be no more snow or snowboarding for a while. =( It was even sadder that Frank couldn’t join us because he had to save for his birthday party.

On the way to Jindy, our convoy made an unexpected pit stop somewhere around the Lake George area. We wondered what was going ’til we saw a couple of figures leap out of the cars and raced behind a bush… then raced back, only to come back out from the car to dump empty beer bottles underneath the brush (*tsk* litterers). We had a bit of a laugh and continued on.

Scheduled stop for petrol at… somewhere I have no idea, but as soon as Ram killed the engine there were shouts of surprise erupting from him and Ruby followed by them scrambling out of the car. Perplexed, I scrabbled out as well and *boggle* it was Frank! …Looking slightly embarrassed, awkward, and quite mischievous all at once.

“Surprise!” he grinned impishly. LOL Surprised we were. Ram, I think, was the most pleased out of everyone. XD hahahah It apparently didn’t take much for Mark to convince him to come and he hid in the car while they were outside Ram’s place. Bien saw him (though they weren’t introduced and didn’t know what was going on), but Mark asked him to keep Frank’s presence a secret. lol dodgy.

Turns out that one of the figures racing for the bushes was Frank! lol He was worried the game was up when he had to run out – Ruby actually saw him, but then didn’t think it was him. Hehe

~**~

We didn’t get to Jindy and to our lodgings until about 4am, so we kind of had a late start to the day – late enough to get half day passes. Oopsy.

The guys wanted to have breakfast at Serg’s – the bacon and egg roll is to die for supposedly (I had a bit and it was pretty good) – so we kind of puttered around there and in the store next door. Ram had asked about 130cm boards and the dude said he actually had some around that size in stock. Kinda fell for the Gnu Danny Kass Mini BTX – so emo!!! Love it. The only thing that I really hesitated at was the banana construction. I’m quite sure I’m not a park rat, and this is very much a park board, but… argh I dunno.

Anywho, even though we had half the day, it was one of the most awesome-est almost blue bird day ever. =D I had borrowed KitKat’s board and I was a bit concerned at its length: 134cm… but once again, it turned out to be unfounded =) It was weird that the first time riding it, I felt like I was riding backwards! Nfi… but it worked out and it’s a pretty sweet board, even if I can’t do switch on it =T

Ruby and I found out that if we concentrated, we could kind of do 360 flatspins…

Hahah yeah I kind of got dizzy after a while and had to stop… and then Lynda introduced to us the sport of snowboard squat racing…

Loads of fun! While I was resting from being beaten, I noticed that there was a halo around the sun…

Ruby and I tried to squeeze in as many runs as we could, which also included the now-not-so-dreaded Traverse and the Supertrail. We tried to work out how many runs and what runs we could do before we had to leave. Must say, the Sundowner is an awesome little trail! =) We also factored in time for a snowman… though we kind of underestimated how long it’d take to build a snowman taller than me (and have great girth to it)…

*sighs* While Bertha stands taller than me, she was suppose to be quite well-rounded as well =T We only had about 15 minutes (of hard manual labour with Ruby resorting to using her snowboard as a shovel lol) until we got shooed off the mountain by a crabby ski patrol guy. *double sigh*

~~~~
Because there were so many of us, the waiting time for the showers was terrible – the guys took waaaay longer than the girls >”< what's up with that?! Bah. Anywho, we had to amuse ourselves somehow in the meantime...
When everyone had finally showered, we headed to Jindabyne Hotel. On the way, Ram lost sight of Mark’s car and called to for directions.
“Take a right at the Audi,” Mark kept repeating to Ram, who responded each time with, “I don’t see an Aldi!!!”
And then suddenly, it clicked…
Hehe… Anywho, massive line to order the food, which was promptly followed by a massive wait. *sighs* So once again…
While most of us got our food, a few managed to get theirs about an hour after ordering… AN HOUR!! Gah. Terrible. The food was okay, definitely nothing to write home about. Though it was interesting that they had the whole cook-your-own steak thing and an indoor grill-ery =) Hehe I got Ric to cook my steak… nice work! It was yummy ^___^ Thaaanks~
After some loitering, the majority of us rather sensibly went back home to get some shut eye. Ruby, Khanh, the guys, and I stayed to watch the Miss Snow Bunny 2008 competition.
Yeah, it wasn’t all that great and they took sooooo long to get changed that after seeing their own creations of what a snow bunny should look like I was ready to go home. More than ready lol.
~**~
Cleaning up the place took a bit of time, as well as loading up the car with luggage and stuff. While Ruby did an excellent job packing everything into the car, she managed to lose the keys to the car…
But it was okay, because it was in her pocket the entire time… she even checked that pocket twice!! Bizarre. Bien was impressed with someone’s packing skills…
“That’s impressive Tetris-packing,” he noted. And Mark was being sad panda all the while…
But then took a break from being sad panda for a pose…
LOL I don’t know why, but I really like that photo. *muses* Maybe it’s because Frank’s got his pants all rolled up and showing his grandpa socks + slippers. teehee
~~~~

Ruby and I wanted to see how Big Bertha was fairing and was going to plump her up…

Noooooes!!!! We were both sad panda for a while. So there were yet more shenanigans…

Where one of the guys found that they have been forbidden to bend! *gasp*

“NOOOOOOooOOOo!!!!” Ram wailed.

“Then how are we supposed to snap?” Frank asked, aghast.

To which I merely sniggered in the background and called them spastics. ^_____^

While the day wasn’t as fun as Saturday (I got rather huffy at Ram and broke the pinky swear with Bien =( Sorry Bien!!! T_________T We’ll build that snowman yet!! … somehow =.=;;), it was still pretty sweet and I’m quite sure we’ve all improved by leaps and bounds this season =) The beginners especially surprised me, Bien picked up and did falling leaf super quick!! w00t! =D

~~~~
On our way home, Ram got an itchy head and had to take off his beanie…
Teehee, but then he couldn’t stand the smell of his thermals and so had to take them off…
Which freaked us out a bit (naturally).
… And which brings me to the conclusion to the trip… =(
So long, adieu to you snow – until next time! ^__________^ It’s been awesome and I’m quite sure it’ll be even better next year! =D
of touch screen ordering goodness
Some of the NZ ‘08 crew managed to meet up for dinner at Wagaya on one Thursday night (4 Sept)… just for kicks. A few of them (Ruby, Mark, and Frank) met up a bit earlier to do a pub crawl outlined by BenH. Sadly they only managed to get through (I think) 4 bars before they had to make their way to the restaurant, but Ruby didn’t seemed too fazed by that – greeting me happily when I met up with them at Star Bar. hehe
It was a good thing that BettyC, KitKat, Chang, and Dly joined us, as we booked a private room ($30 for the private room – bit of a surprise when we saw the bill; would have been nice if there was some warning =P is all) and the room would have been a bit too big without their company. =)
Food is ordered, you guessed it, via a touch screen, where after choosing your dish you select how many of that dish you want and confirm your order twice. It was definitely a lot of fun! ^___^ We ordered what seemed like stupid amounts of food and plum wine, but I was feeling rather peckish afterwards, realising that I didn’t actually eat that much because I was too busy taking photos =.= gg.
Ruby was downing the tasty plum wine (you seriously could not taste the alcohol content in it! Got me almost tipsy too, though that’s kind of not hard to do =.=, but it just creeped up on me!) like it was water, which, along with her earlier shot of an ABC (absinthe, bacardi 151, and chartreuse), did not quite bode well.
She was really quite happy when we left, though needed to lean on me for support when walking out to George St. to catch a taxi home. It was kind of funny because she ended up hugging everyone goodbye – with me still attached, so I was kind of squished between her and her hug recipient XD.
It was a different story, however, when we got into the car – she went all quiet as we drove off. I looked over and asked if she was okay.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m good,” she said offhandedly. I was not convinced and decided to get ready, just in case.
Jess (who was sitting next to me) and Ram (sitting in the front passenger seat) were talking about… I don’t know what… but she paused and turned to me to ask, “Are you cold or something? Why do you have your hands in the [shopping] bag?”
“Hold on,” I responded, pulling out all of my newly purchased clothes from their confine and handed Ruby the bag… which she promptly threw up in. XD
I was a bit worried that the plastic-paper bag would leak, as you know its use was not quite intended to hold liquids, but it surprisingly did a good job (there was just a bit of umm, liquid on the plastic carpet cover thingy when we exited the taxi).
Ruby ran off to throw the bag away, only she placed it right next to a charity clothing bin. LOL Oh man, she was so trash bagged. hahaha Definitely one of the highlights of the night ^_^ teehee
of snowboarding stacks
Highly exciting title, I must admit. *makes a face* Anywho, I know I promised to put up some more videos of snowboarding and stacks… so without further ado, here they are =)
Apologies for the terrible splicing in the last one. I’m not very good and program I use likes to eat the audio of the first video when I delete too many frames =.=
Anywho… going back this weekend! Muhahah… hopefully it won’t be too icy or slushy. =)
Sep 01
of an entire week’s worth
So… last Tuesday (26th August), Jess, Sam, Frank, Ram, and I went to see Pineapple Express… but not before having a few drinks at Blackett (which is not technically Privilege!).
I had to work back a bit so when I did manage to meet up with them, they were already giggling-tipsy. T_T I was starving and I didn’t want another In Bruges experience, so I tried to hustle them off to eat.
Hahaha, getting them to leave was as easy as budging an elephant sitting down. In the end, I kinda put my foot down and said that I’m going to eat, with or without them, and may I have my ticket please. In the end, Sam, Jess, and I bought Hungry Jack’s to eat in the cinemas… and somehow Frank and Ram got there, seated, before us – even though they were still drinking when we had left. O_oa
I felt kind of difficult, demanding, and petulant that night: wanting to go eat, then after the movie, wanting to go home… and I felt heaps terrible about it ‘cuz I was being so selfish about things, but Ram and Frank thought I wasn’t being anything close. Hmmm… which I guess is a good thing, even though I can’t help be shake the feeling that I should really keep my petulance in check and just go with the group’s flow.
Note to self: petulance, in check, keep.
~**~
Thursday rolled around and found Sam, Ram, and I at Ceci, a Korean restaurant. I remember Minh saying that it’s a favourite of hers, so I was pretty confident that whatever we ordered would be good.
Still, things got a bit complicated because Ram can’t eat beef and I can’t hack spicy stuff, but Sam was good for anything. Made a couple of compromises and along with the usual side dishes, we ended up eating:
You reckon that’s a lot for 3 people? Heck yes!!! XD We were sooooo stuffed afterwards; Sam was lamenting that he was all “meated out”. XD I kept on eating non-spicy stuff because the spiciness of the pork had built-up and I felt bad wasting any food. I was actually quite pleased with my spicy tolerance! Still got a loooong ways to go, but Ima getting there. =D
We walked out from Ceci feeling slightly sleepy from all the food and definitely with more rounded bellies.
Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins and I think Dessert should be right up there as well as a separate sin. *sighs* Yeah, we went to have dessert straight after.
We ended up at Cafe Ca’d'or, where we ordered Pat Bing Soo: shaved ice with red beans, seasonal fruits, and ice cream. We figured, well, there’s three of us, king-sized can’t be that big, right?
Right… Our jaws just dropped when we saw it; rendered us speechless too!
I do believe these Koreans are all sorts of crazy =.=;; Who can actually eat all that!? Needless to say, we practically died about halfway through. Sam thought it’d be mostly ice, but it’s not! Lots of fruit though, so that was good… just… there was so much of it!! XD
I swear on my way home, I thought I’d throw up because I was so full. T_T
~**~
Friday, I spent with Ruby going over NZ photos that the guys had uploaded during the week. Hehe poor thing was capped for a week, so she came over. It’s always fun to just hang out and mess around on the ‘nets. ^_^
~**~
Saturday… oh! Had yum cha with mom and brother at Fortune 8, though it wasn’t as tasty as usual. I put it down to my stomach still feeling a bit bent out of shape from Thursday night, but mom also found it not as great either. Hopefully it was just an off day, I love that place! Would be sad to see it lose their standing amongst the multitude of yum cha places.
I’ve been putting this off for a while, but mom finally dragged me off to the accountant and we did our taxes together. Yay tax return! =D
~**~
I was feeling super lazy on Sunday, not wanting to go to the Malaysian Food Festival at Tumbalong Park as I had promised Howie ages ago. The weather was a bit iffy too, making me want to just burrow deep into my blankets and snooze all through the day… or at least read in bed =) That’s always nice.
Anywho, I got a call from Leon and then from Minh, who does the best guilt trips without having to say much at all nor have any sort of guilt-laying tone. T_T I don’t know how she does it. She knew I’d crack too, damn it. lol
We were suppose to be at the festival at 11am, but we didn’t leave til 12:30ish, getting there at about 1:30pm (we kind of… um… got lost along the way haha). The lines at some of the stalls were massive! And like true Asians, we lined up at the stalls sporting the longest lines – it makes sense in a way: they must be selling something nice to warrant such a line.
Thinking it’d be smarter to split up to get our respective food (whoever thought of that was right), we gradually met up with each other again, food in hand, munching away whilst waiting in various lines. The Mamak line was the longest, and it took the longest to get the food too – which was the line Leon was in.
While we were waiting for Leon’s food, a little kerfuffle occurred at the stall next to us.
“Excuse me, there is a line you know,” an irritated Indian lady spouted.
“Sorry, we didn’t know there was a line,” replied one of the two Chinese ladies, slightly reproachfully.
“Well, there is,” she snapped. “It’s just… it keeps happening you know? It’s happened at least two times already. The same people push in and it’s just annoying.”
Right off the bat, the other lady bristled, “What do you mean ‘the same people’!? I’ve never seen you before!” While the Indian lady purchased her ISO100 Isotonic drink and left with an air of huffiness and I-can’t-be-bothered-any-more, the bristling Chinese lady hurled insults after her and her friend tried to calm her down (especially since she was getting all gung-ho and wanting to tackle the Indian lady).
Crazy…
Oh! I saw Jackie from work and her son Ripley sitting on a blanket and planned to say hi to her once we got our food, but she got to me first, coming over to where I was lining up. We chatted about what food to get and I asked her about the pancake thing, which she recommended, but I didn’t get to get because the line was massive and the wait for it to be made equally as long. Ironically, I was in that line to get some sticky rice thingies, but figured pancake = warm dessert that needs to be eaten straight away, so didn’t get one while I was there. *sigh*
We ended up getting ice kachang, which I’ve never had before and thought it was brilliant – though sadly my shaved ice melted a heck of a lot faster than I had anticipated. =( Jackie later told me that it wasn’t very authentic and she didn’t like it very much – interested to see what an authentic ice kachang would taste like!
Not wanting to go home yet, we meandered around Maxim, the new Japanese supermarket on George St (downstairs, near the cinemas), and the 100-yen store (which is about 2.50 aussie lol). We giggled at some of the product’s names, like “Sexy Mild” shampoo. Teehee, that still makes me laugh.
Once we had enough of funny product names, Leon took us home. =)
Sep 01
of an awesome weekend
The title, really, says it all. (Well, besides the fact this is about the weekend starting on 22nd August. =P Damn backloggedness)
On Friday, Ram and I met up with Sam for a couple of drinks… yeah okay, so they had a few drinks at Privilege *shudders* with Frank and them. I met up with them afterwards, when they got hungry =) Yay food!
After much deliberation, we ended up at GPO, where we had pizza… that was surprisingly not filling. Quite nice, but terribly not filling. The chips we had afterwards were the best though! Very full afterwards (and very garlicky too lol damn aioli, so good, yet so…. garlicky XD).
I think that’s all we did… drank, ate, and chatted… Then we went home. It was a nice night out though ^_^
~**~
We were suppose to go to Thredbo on the weekend, leaving Sydney on Friday after work, and board for 2 days… only the guys in Strathfield FC won their semi-final game and the finals was on Saturday!
Initially, I was a bit grumpy that Ram pushed the snow trip back to accommodate for the grand final, but it turned out to be a good decision. =P
After some very, very close calls, Strathfield FC won: 1-0!! =D w00t w00t! The guys were naturally ecstatic and there were much celebrating XD
As it turns out, Ani’s friends with David Tse and also use to play Sunday soccer with him (until he twisted his ankle during his drunken birthday night last year – can’t help but chuckle at that ‘cuz it’s such an Ani thing to do hehe) and he was there! O_O It was good to see him after all this time, even though it was so random XD
And of course, more photos are on flickr.
~~~~

Mark led us to Frank’s house, where we watched some Samurai Pizza Cats before bundling him up in the car and headed to Mark’s place to pick up Frank’s snow gear.

It just so happened that Mark’s sister’s boss was there, which also meant his BMW 545i was there… which Mark took us for a spin in.

Much fun, to say the least ;) teehee

Though I think Frank and I were more amused with the seat heaters than anything else haha. It got real warm real fast too! Oddly enough though, you’d think that the left button would be for the back left passenger, so right button for right passenger… it wasn’t, it was the other way around. Hmmm.

~~~~
After finally dropping by my place (twice, because I had forgotten something… typical!) and Ruby’s (I had woke her up when we were outside her place, but we left to go back to mine before she came out and so she thought she dreamt that we were outside lol), we were finally on our way to Jindy!
Ruby took the first leg and somehow we (i.e. Frank, Ram, and I) ended up watching Wanted. Because Ruby was driving and couldn’t watch it, I tried to fill in for her the more interesting and fantastic scenes. =) That was quite fun.
I took the second leg and stopped by in Cooma for rental gear. (Yes, I think I shall buy a board + bindings after all =P) Ram also had to rent something – pants… because he had ripped his in NZ doing jumps and tricks XD terrible!
Ruby was outside sorting out the boards and stuff (I think) when she noticed a car reversing out of its spot quite slowly. She didn’t think much of it until she realised there was no one in it! It managed to roll out of the car park, across the road and stopped up this hill on the other side of the road XD ROFL!
She ran inside the store and told people inside what had happened, where the owner rather embarrassedly went to fetch his car.
We always seem to mess around in Cooma for longer than scheduled for some reason and that night was no different. We didn’t end up at our accommodation until 1am-ish I think. Ben, Ben Yee’s high school friend, was pretty nice about the whole thing and hopefully we weren’t too disturbing at such a late hour. He also offered us breakfast, which was terribly nice, as we knew none of them. It was a bit awkward, but it wasn’t too bad ‘cuz they were really nice people =).
~**~
I was a bit worried of ice and stuff, but that’s just me doing the usual fretting. It had snowed on Friday and we heard it was pretty awesome at Perisher yesterday. My fretting turned out to be (as usual) unfounded. I missed Cardrona’s sweet, sweet powder and runs, but the conditions at Thredbo were pretty nice… except for the mini moguls that were littered randomly on certain slopes – most probably from people shifting the snow and thus getting packed over time (this was Ruby’s theory hehe which sounds pretty solid to me).
I’d get unexpected air, freak out, land it, but would do heavy toe-side or heel-side to negate the speed I happened to pick up, which really ended up killing my arches and ankles. Hmm. After some discussion with Ruby and Ram, it could be because of the combination of incorrect technique and ill-fitting boots. The boots are easily sorted out (hopefully), but the technique, not so much. Will try to see what’s the go in 2 weeks when we go back and I’ve remembered to take the boots in for a proper fit. =)
Ruby and I accidentally went down the Dream Run, which was really a lot of fun – right up to the last bit where it was slushy with bark peeping out from the snow. The second time ’round, later in the day, was even worse: slush had iced over and it was hard-packed. Ew.
Ruby and I met up with the boys at Eagle’s Nest Bistro, apparently Australia’s highest restaurant at 1930m elevation. While lunching, Frank spotted Delta Goodrem sitting behind us. She moved to the table next to us, where we realised that she was with Brian McFadden (plus her mamma and friend). We naturally took paparazzi photos =P She’s really pretty in real life as well! Hehe, Ruby and I bumped into her in the toilets, where she was touching up her make-up.
Must-try food at Eagle’s Nest Bistro: triple-brie on toast. Wah! It was so yummy.
Must-try drink at Eagle’s Nest Bistro: Gluhwein. They used good sweet red wine, spiced it up, and served it quite warm. I only took a couple of sips because I didn’t want to get tipsy (yeah I know I’m such a light-weight XD).
After doing silly jumping shots, we decided to head back down the mountain. I had just come out of the toilet to find Ram holding up a chick who was trying to put on her skis. She had managed one, but the right one was giving her grief.
Many minutes later, with the help of her friend (who I think turned out to be Brian McFadden – man I so don’t recognise him/know his face at all… in fact, I still don’t! lol), she finally got her skis on. Yay! We were joking around, saying, “How many snowboarders does it take to put on skis?” lol But to be fair, we weren’t to know what’s what! I mean, it all made sense in hindsight after seeing what he did, and hopefully we’ll remember for next time, but it’s been about 6 years since Ruby and I have used skis (and even then it was just for 3 days hehe).
Anywho, it was tiring but awesomely satisfying day – even though I did end up taking a power nap with my head on the table while waiting for Ruby to do another run of the Supertrail (my feet hates the Supertrail). We all managed to do funny stacks (Frank’s and Ruby’s I have taped! Muhahah). I can’t remember Ram’s one, but mine, I was going down High Noon and I must have hit a mini mogul or something because next thing I knew I was tumbling down the mountain… and then I was on my back, board in the air, with my head pointing down the mountain… still sliding down at a rather impressive speed. ROFL! XD NFI how I managed that and I can’t remember what I did to get out of that power slide, but I know couldn’t stop laughing at the silliness. =)
A few more photos on flickr, videos will be up hopefully tomorrow. =)
After all this exposure to snow… I do believe I’m getting up there with the obsession with boarding… not quite up to where Ram is, mind you, but I think I am getting there haha. Oh dear…
of ski action – day 9
17 August – Day 9
In which we go home
*sighs* I so didn’t want to go home, back to normality and work. And I know I’d miss New Zealand so much – it’s immense expanse of sky (that seems to be bigger than the sky over Sydney for some reason) and pretty landscape. Bah =(
Anywho, Ruby had SMS’ed saying that her flight got cancelled due to bad weather and she had to catch a bus to Christchurch. She would have missed her connecting flight from Christchurch to Sydney, so they re-issued her ticket for Monday’s flight, which meant that she had to look for accommodation in Christchurch herself. Poor thing.
Our flight was direct from Queenstown to Sydney, and so far we haven’t had any flights cancelled on us. We hoped it would be the case this time around as well. Fortunately, it was.
It takes about 1 to 1 and a half hours to get to Queenstown from Wanaka, going along a winding road threading through two mountain peaks and down the side of one of the mountains. Last time we went used that road, the cliff-side bits of the road had no rail guards or anything. This year, we noticed they had built a low wooden rail at the edge. Not particularly safe still, but I guess it’s a bit more comforting to have than nothing at all.
While we’ve taken this road before, it was the first time we’ve seen it covered in snow and the lingering low clouds. The sight was amazing.
We stopped to have our annual lunch at Fergburger, the best burger place I have ever been to. Though admittedly I’ve only tried the one burger there: The Ferg lol I can’t seem to choose something else.
Our flight left on time, no hassles besides the fact we got there a bit late for check-in due to a bit of a run around when dropping off the rental cars. As soon as we checked in, we made a beeline for the gate, where people were already lining up to board the plane.
Ram’s friend, John, who came with 24 of his other mates, also caught our flight and was scattered around the plane. Most of them had Nintendo DS’s and so there was this massive Mario Kart race happening. This little girl, Olivia, sitting across the aisle from Elena asked if she could play too. Hehe, cute.
Finally got to watch Iron Man! =D Yay! They had started the movie a bit late, so it was still going by the time we had touched down. The flight attendant kept interrupting the movie for important announcements, one of which was an apology for not being able to finish the movie. The guy next to me muttered, “Stop talking then and just play the movie!” I totally shared that sentiment. Happily, we did get to finish it. =)
So ends another wonderful snow trip in New Zealand. Hopefully next year, we’ll be back =) I’m 80% sure we will be! hahaha
Anywho, a few videos from the trip:
(I think I’ll just stick with YouTube for vids… flickr’s a bit flaky with them)
